Jorhat is also called the soul of Assam. It is one of Assam’s largest towns and derives its name from two haats or bazaars “Macharhat and Chowkihat” on the banks of River Bhogdoi. This town is home to Hollongapar Gibbon wildlife sanctuary and one of the world’s largest riverine island Majuli. Jorhat also boasts the presence of Tocklai Research Institute one of the oldest and largest tea research station of its kind in the world.Jorhat is also known as the “Cultural Capital of Assam”
