Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is bounded by the Garagal Beel pond and the mighty Brahmaputra River.. The park’s proximity to Guwahati makes it a popular day-trip or weekend visit. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the densest population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros, in the world. Popularly known as ‘mini Kaziranga’, Pobitora was declared a sanctuary in 1987. Pobitora is shut during the monsoon season. It closes at the end of April or mid-May, depending on the weather, and re-opens at the beginning of October.

Pobitora is also home to the oriental-pied hornbill, the smallest of Asian hornbills. Elephant rides and jeep safaris are the best way to explore the sanctuary and spot some wildlife

The waterside location also makes the park an ornithologist’s treat, with over 86 species of birds present.
